Downhole gas separator installed below a progressing cavity (PC) pump to separate free gas from the produced fluid before it enters the pump, helping avoid costly pump damage. The fluid enters through angled intake ports and travels along helical flow channels in the separation mandrel, which raise its velocity. Centrifugal force drives the heavier liquids and solids to the outside of the inner housing, while the separated gas follows the mandrel and is exhausted through the gas exhaust port to the casing annulus. The flow direction is reversed at the flow chamber entry, producing a shearing effect that breaks down heavy oil and sand clumps. Large ports on the top sub let the gas-free liquids and solids continue into the PC pump and up the tubing. With no moving parts it is a low-maintenance tool, providing up to 90% separation efficiency. Standard sizes: minimum casing 4 in to 9-5/8 in, maximum OD 3.00 in to 6.63 in, EU connections 2-3/8 in to 5-1/2 in, flow volumes 629 to 6,290 bbl/day (100 to 1,000 m³/day). Alternate connections and specially engineered sizes are available on request.
